SUMMARY:Dean's Lecture | Dr. Darren Baker | Impacts of Cellular Senescence on Aging\, Cancer and Neurodegeneration
DESCRIPTION:Join Us! Dean’s Distinguished Lecture with Dr. Darren Baker\nDarren Baker\, Ph.D. \nSenescent cells\, once seen as protective against cancer\, are now recognized as drivers of aging and disease. This talk will highlight some of our more recent understanding for senescent cells in the contribution of driving age-associated neurodegeneration and tumor progression. \nDr. Baker’s laboratory focuses on the involvement of senescent cells in aging and age-related diseases\, with particular focus on neoplastic transformation and neurodegenerative disease. Using novel genetic models that allow for the elimination of senescent cells\, he was one of the first to demonstrate that both premature and normal aging are driven by increased incidences of senescence. \n  \nRSVP HERE\n\nWhen – April. 11 | 12-1 p.m. | Reception to follow\nLocation – Lois Pope Life Center Seventh Floor Auditorium

SUMMARY:Nobel Laureate James E. Rothman\, Ph.D. | New Insights into Basic Mechanisms of Synaptic Neurotransmission
DESCRIPTION:Join Us! Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series with Nobel Prize Winner James E. Rothman\, Ph.D.\nNew Insights into Basic Mechanisms of Synaptic Neurotransmission | Understanding the Extraordinary Speed and Process of Synchronous Release \n \nJames E. Rothman\, Ph.D.\, Nobel laureate and one of the world’s most distinguished biochemists and cell biologists\, has spent his career exploring the molecular mechanisms and machinery governing vesicle traffic in cells. His research delves into this complex process\, covering topics such as hormone secretion\, including insulin\, action-potential-controlled neurotransmitter release in synaptic transmission and the propagation of membrane compartments in the cytoplasm during cell growth and division. \nThis lecture will explore the ultra-fast release of neurotransmitters\, a process that determines the speed of cognition. By reconstituting synchronous release from pure proteins\, researchers have uncovered surprising mechanistic insights into the remarkable speed of this process and the underlying structures that make it possible.  \nRSVP HERE\n\nWhen – October 30 | 5 p.m. | Reception to follow\nLocation – First Floor Auditorium | Don Soffer Clinical Research Center |1120 NW 14th St\, Miami\, FL 33136

SUMMARY:Dean's Distinguished Lecture: Nobel Laureate Dr. Michael Rosbash
DESCRIPTION:The Circadian Rhythm Story\nPast\, Present and Future: Feb. 29\, 2024 | 5-6:30 p.m.\nRSVP: Email UHealthEvents@med.miami.edu \nMark your calendars for the upcoming Dean Henri Ford’s Distinguished Lecture Series\, featuring Nobel Laureate Michael Rosbash\, Ph.D.\, a Professor of Biology and the Peter Gruber Professor of Neuroscience at Brandeis University. Dr. Rosbash was awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and is also an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. \n\nDr. Rosbash has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression\, especially RNA metabolism in yeast. He is best known for his work in Drosophila (fruit flies)\, which illuminated our current understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie circadian rhythms. These same molecules and biological principles not only control Drosophila circadian clocks\, but they also govern the ubiquitous process of circadian rhythmicity throughout the entire animal kingdom. \nDr. Rosbash and his colleagues have received numerous awards for their circadian work\, including the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. They previously received the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine\, the Wiley Prize in Biomedical Sciences\, the Massry Prize\, the Canada Gairdner International Award\, the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize for Outstanding Basic Research\, and the Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation Neuroscience Prize. Dr. Rosbash is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences\, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. \nHis presentation at the Miller School of Medicine will focus on: \n\nAn update on circadian biology and its effect on human health.\nThe fly Drosophila melanogaster and its impact on biology and medicine.\nHuman genetics and biological timing.\n\nRSVP: Email UHealthEvents@med.miami.edu \n\nThis activity has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™*
