Dr. Byrnes is an assistant professor on the Clinical Educator track in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center/University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Her focus is on benign hematology, with research interests in women’s health and cancer-associated thrombosis. Dr. Byrnes has a deep passion for benign hematology, appreciating the challenging clinical scenarios it presents, many of which can become life-threatening if not identified and managed promptly.
One of the primary reasons Dr. Byrnes chose to stay in academic medicine is the rewarding experience of training medical students, residents, and fellows. During her fellowship, she organized quarterly benign hematology symposiums addressing complex topics such as the management of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and an overview of bleeding disorders in women. Since joining the faculty, Dr. Byrnes has remained active in education by providing lectures to fellows during academic half days and organizing bi-weekly benign hematology conferences focused on clinically challenging cases. She also delivers an annual presentation on hematologic disorders in pregnancy for Dr. Gerald Soff’s Hematology Education Online lecture series, targeting medical trainees both nationally and internationally.
In terms of research, Dr. Byrnes is dedicated to launching multi-center, collaborative clinical trials that could lead to practice-changing advancements in benign hematology. She serves as the primary investigator for a phase III trial investigating a novel anticoagulant targeting factor XI in cancer-associated thrombosis. Additionally, Dr. Byrnes has a strong interest in women’s health within hematology, recognizing it as an area with significant unmet needs. Through her collaborative research efforts, she aims to become a locally and nationally recognized expert in the management of complex non-malignant hematology.
