Thousands of day-long audio recordings were collected from children with hearing loss in their natural environments. Recordings were analyzed with automatic speech and language processing software to recover variables known to be important for language and communicative development. This grand rounds session will demonstrate how mothers and fathers engage in conversations with their sons and daughters, the role siblings play in family communication, how child- and adult-directed communication differs, and how certain communicative disorders influence family conversational dynamics.
