Marco Ladino, M.D.

Marco Aurelio Ladino Avellaneda completed his Medical Doctor and Surgeon degree at Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora Del Rosario in Bogota, Colombia in 2003. He then pursued further specialization in the field of Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center/Miami VA Medical Center. Dr. Ladino Avellaneda continued his professional development by completing fellowships in nephrology, including Interventional Nephrology, Transplant Nephrology, Advance Nephrology with a Research-Academic track, and Hypertension (American Hypertension Specialist Certification). He will complete his master’s in public health in September 2024.

Dr. Ladino Avellaneda serves as the Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology, Clinical Director of the Division of Nephrology, Associate Program Director for the Nephrology Fellowship at the University of Miami, Chief of Nephrology and Hypertension Section at the Bruce W. Carter Miami VA Medical Center. Additionally, Dr. Ladino Avellaneda is actively involved in the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Department, where he holds the rank of Colonel as an Internal Medicine and Nephrology Officer and serves as a Consultant to the Surgeon General for Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He has been deployed multiple times as an Internist in service to our country.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ladino Avellaneda has received numerous awards and honors for his outstanding contributions to the education of residents and fellows, including being recognized as Attending of the Year and Instructor of the Year multiple times by the University of Miami Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. Dr. Ladino’s research interests include chronic kidney disease progression, acute kidney injury and kidney transplantation.

Michele Stanchina, M.D.
Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

Dr. Michele Stanchina is a new Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology who focuses specifically on Lymphoma. She joined us as faculty last year after completing her hematology/oncology fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami in June 2023. Prior to moving to Florida, she earned her medical degree from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed her internal medical residency training at Mt. Sinai St. Luke’s-Roosevelt in New York. Additionally, she holds a masters degree from Tulane University in Neuroscience.

Her clinical practice and research focus is on both Hodgkin Lymphoma and Non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphomas. She is currently working on multiple projects in the field including examining healthcare disparities among patients with Diffuse Large B-cell lymphoma, and decreasing toxicity in patients with Hodgkin Lymphoma by giving them abbreviated chemotherapy. She will be opening several clinical trials in the next few months and is working on an investigator initiated trial as well.

In addition to her clinical and research work, Dr. Stanchina is dedicated to teaching the residents and fellows while she is rotating through the inpatient service and has been mentoring both a resident and medical student on various research projects.

  • Recognize obesity as an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD).
  • Assess the physiopathology and impact of obesity on kidney health to develop effective treatment strategies.
  • Identify the new therapies for patients with obesity related kidney disease and chronic kidney disease.
Dr. Stanchina’s Presentation
  • Name the most common treatment regimen for DLBCL.
  • Name two new drugs recently approved for DLBCL.
  • Explain the mechanism of action of polatuzumab and glofitamab.
