Dr Spilias is an interventional and structural cardiologist and assistant professor at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. He specializes in catheter-based, minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of coronary artery disease and heart valve disorders. His areas of expertise include cardiac catheterization, PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention), TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement), TMVR (transcatheter mitral valve replacement), mitral and tricuspid TEER (transcatheter edge-to-edge repair/clip), PVL (paravalvular leak) closure, PFO/ASD closure, and percutaneous mechanical circulatory support (IABP, Impella).
Dr. Spilias earned his medical degree with honors from the University of Athens School of Medicine. After moving to the United States, he completed his internal medicine residency at Emory University School of Medicine, where he received the Golden Stethoscope Award for his clinical skills. He then completed his fellowship in cardiovascular diseases and advanced fellowship in interventional and structural cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, where he received the Whitlow Award for his excellent procedural skills.
Dr. Spilias has performed substantial research in the field of structural heart therapies, focusing on innovation, procedural optimization and improvement of patient outcomes. He has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences. In 2021, he received an award from the American College of Cardiology for his research project on 3D printing for patients with complex tricuspid valve disease.
Dr. Spilias’ goal is to provide world-class, top-quality care for patients with coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease by using leading-edge technology and providing the latest and most advanced procedural therapies. He is passionate about advancing the field through innovative research and mentoring new generations of interventional cardiologists.
