Fabian Emura is a staff physician of the Digestive Health and Liver Diseases Division at the University of Miami and a full-time advanced endoscopist at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
After graduating from Universidad del Valle, he completed a general surgery fellowship at Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Later in Japan, he completed a doctoral program in GI tumor biology at the University of Tsukuba and a 3- year fellowship in interventional GI endoscopy and GI surgery at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo.
In 2008, Dr. Emura initiated his academic career at Universidad de la Sabana, Medical School in Bogota DC, Colombia, where he was soon appointed as Associate Professor of Medicine, and from 2017 to 2024, he was promoted as the Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology.
Throughout his career, Dr. Emura has been actively involved in clinical investigations related to GI tumors, particularly the early endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of cancer and image-enhanced endoscopy. He is the inventor of Systematic Alphanumeric Coded Endoscopy (SACE) for the early diagnosis of upper GI tract malignancies and has pioneered its global implementation and training. Dr. Emura also pioneered the NBI colon polyp classification and the Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) technique for removal of gastrointestinal cancers in Latin America. Since 2006, he has introduced and funded an uninterrupted annual gastric cancer screening program in Colombia through the Emura Foundation for Cancer Research, benefiting more than 2500 low socio-economical class patients.
Dr. Emura has received dozens of awards and recognition. He received the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Top Reviewer Award in 2012, 2015, 2021, 2022, and in 2020, he was highly recognized by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy as the recipient of the International Service Award. More recently, in 2024, Dr Emura was awarded the Master Endoscopist Award by the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO). He served as the President of the Colombian Society of Endoscopy (2014-2016), the President of the InterAmerican Society of Endoscopy (2014-2016), the Scientific Committee Chair of the 2nd World Congress of Endoscopy, ENDO 2020, and the President of the WEO 2020-2022.
He is a reviewer for most of the major endoscopy journals and has authored or co-authored more than 80 original articles, books, book chapters, and reviews covering a wide range of digestive disease topics. Dr. Emura is an internationally recognized clinician and educator and a popular world-class speaker.
