Dr. Bonventre is the Samuel A. Levine Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Chief of Renal Medicine, and Founding Chief of Engineering in Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He previously served as Director of the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology.

His research focuses on kidney injury and repair, with a particular emphasis on inflammation, translational biomarkers, and stem cells. He discovered Kidney Injury Molecule-1 (KIM-1), a urinary and plasma injury and prognostic biomarker and identified the KRAB-A domain’s role in transcription inhibition, a core component of CRISPRi technology.

Dr. Bonventre has developed protocols to convert human stem cells into kidney tissue. With over 450 original publications, 155+ chapters and reviews, and three books, his work has been cited over 96,000 times (h-index of 155). He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. A past-president of the American Society of Nephrology, he also co-founded the National Space Biology Research Institute.

Dr. Bonventre has received numerous honors, including the Homer Smith Award, the Osler Medal, the Bywaters Award, and the Massry Award. His NIH-funded research has earned him two MERIT awards from the NIDDK. He has also served on the NIH-NIDDK Advisory Council and is the Editor of Seminars in Nephrology.

  • Assess the definition of acute kidney injury (AKI) and the problems with this definition as well as the role for biomarkers.
  • Assess the pathophysiology of AKI and the implications for patient management.
  • Assess the factors involved in adaptive repair after kidney injury and the factors that lead to maladaptive repair with development of chronic kidney disease.
